Sunday, July 30, 2006 - Arrochar to Inveruglas
The coast to coast walk begins with a short 2 km forest walk to Arrochar at the head of Loch Long, an inlet of the Firth of Clyde, followed by a low level 6km hike up Glen Loin through the Arrochar Alps to Inveruglas on the 'bonnie banks of Loch Lomond'.
Distance: 8 kms.

Monday, July 31, 2006 - Inveruglas to Inversnaid - Loch Katrine - Loch Achray
Today we catch an early ferry from Inveruglas across Loch Lomond, below the north west slopes of Ben Lomond, to Inversnaid. We follow the northern shore of Loch Arklett before embarking on the S.S. Sir Walter Scott for a boat trip down Loch Katrine through countryside immortalised by the writer in his Waverley novels. This is the heart of Rob Roy country, most famous of Scotts' characters, who unlike Robin Hood actually existed. From the eastern end of the Loch a further walk by the shores of Loch Achray brings us to the end of the days hike. Distance: 11 kms. Overnight: Annfield Guest House, Callendar. (B, L, D) |
Tuesday, August 1, 2006 - Loch Achray to Callendar
We walk through the wooded slopes of the Menteith Hills by L Venachar with superb views of Ben Ledi and Ben Vane to the highland town of Callendar, capital of the Trossachs Hills. After the walk there may be an opportunity to visit the Rob Roy visitor centre.

Thursday, August 3, 2006 - Callendar to Strathyre
The hike starts along the banks of the River Leni before a cycle track is followed along the shores of Loch Lubnaig through one of the regions most dramatic V-shaped glens, Strathyre, to finish at the village of the same name.

Friday, August 4, 2006 - Strathyre to Forest of Acharn
Today we continue the coast-to-coast walk by Lochearnhead, famous for its' water sports and along the track bed of a dismantled railway to the head of Glen Ogle, above Killin, at the entrance to Acharn Forest. Distance: 15 kms. Overnight: Killin Hotel, Killin. (B, L, D) |
Saturday, August 5, 2006 - Acharn to Ardnal Taig
The route continues through pine-forested Acharn to the hills above Loch Tay, the waters of which feed the distilleries of many famous brands of Scotch whiskey. Sunday, August 6, 2006 - Ardnaltaig to Aughnafree
From the shores of Loch Tay we walk though Glenalmond, the remotest part of the route, past ancient homesteads, to the isolated sheep farm at Aughnafree. Here the shepherds have constructed possibly the remotest golf course on earth. Distance: 13 kms. Overnight: Amulree, Amulree Hotel. (B, L, D) |

Wednesday, August 9, 2006 - Amulree to Harrietfield near Methven
A short gentle ascent takes us over the saddle between Meall nan Caorach and Meall Reamhar down to the small village of Harrietfield and Glenalmond College, one of Scotlands premier high schools. From the saddle there are superb views of the Perthshire lowlands and the city of Perth. Distance: 12 kms. Overnight: Amulree Hotel. (B, L, D) |
Thursday, August 10, 2006 - Methven to Perth
Our final days’ hike through sheep pastures and arable land brings us to Perth, capital of Scotland and seat of the Scottish Kings before England and Scotland were united by the succession of James VI of Scotland who became James I of England after the death of Elizabeth I. Distance: 15 kms. Overnight: Perth, Ardfern, Achnacarry and Iona Guesthouses. (B, L, D) |
Friday, August 11, 2006 - Perth to Edinburgh
In the morning we visit Scone Palace, crowning place of the Kings of Scotland. (Website: www.scone-palace.net). In the afternoon we travel to Edinburgh where there may be an opportunity to shop before we attend the world famous spectacle of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo below the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle. Saturday, August 12, 2006 – Edinburgh to Glasgow to Toronto
Following our breakfast, we depart for Glasgow and our return Air Transat charter back to Toronto. |
